A comprehensive public realm plan for central Oslo

This morning, we unveiled our Oslo Public Realm Plan for the central Oslo area of Grønland-Vaterland at a packed event together with our client OMA/Nedre Akerselva Områdeforum.
With Central Oslo facing a host of challenges such as crime, traffic, low-quality public spaces, and fragmented development projects, our Oslo Public Realm Plan (Nedre Akerselva Bygulvsplan) outlines a comprehensive strategy for turning this previously neglected part of Oslo into a vibrant, green, and attractive neighbourhood for all.

The plan’s many recommendations include both long-term public realm investments as well as 21 short-term ‘urban quick fixes’ – amongst others:
* Improving the area’s City Nature values through daylighting new blue-green eco-corridors along Akerselva and Hovinbekken.
* Create improved ‘Public Life Corridors’, strengthening the area’s public life while connecting to the adjacent Sentrum, Kvadraturen, and Tøyen neighborhoods.
* Tear down Nylandsbrua and use the site for public life and city nature amenities.
* Initiate a public/private partnership between Oslo Kommune and landowners regarding maintenance and safety.
* Experiment with small-scale interventions in the public realm to generate immediate urban quality.

A big thanks to our bold clients and collaborators in Nedre Akerselva Områdeforum: Nova Spektrum, AspelinRamm, Olav Thon Gruppen, Galleri Oslo Utvikling, Bane Nor Eiendom, KLP, Entra, and Stiftelsen Anker.
