Job — Biologist (3+ years of experience)

Are you passionate about biodiversity and nature-based urban development? Would you like to contribute to creating impactful, high-quality nature solutions in SLA’s projects? Then you might be the colleague we’re looking for. Our team of biologists is seeking a new member to join us at our Copenhagen office.

About the role and team

The position as a biologist includes supporting the design studio’s interdisciplinary analysis and carrying out strategies, recommendations, concepts, and nature management and monitoring plans in Danish and international projects. As a biologist, you will help create better conditions for life in the urban realm. You will work within the complex interplay between biodiversity and other ecosystem services, enabling nature to thrive through integrated design and maintenance strategies.

You will be part of a design team at the Copenhagen office and a cross-office professional community for biologists with a close working environment for sparring and professional support. You will work closely with the project manager on various projects and the projects’ interdisciplinary colleagues: anthropologist, architect, landscape architect, planting designer, and lighting designer. And collaborate with clients, authorities, nature organizations, and other stakeholders in city planning and nature-based projects.

Our culture

The culture at SLA is characterized by solid unity and eternal curiosity combined with a high level of ambition and a great degree of freedom. We work purposefully to create high-quality consultancy and strengthen the professional community. The employees’ and SLA’s ongoing development is an essential and integrated part of everyday life. • Produce biodiversity reports and documentation
  • Communicate ecological insights visually and verbally to colleagues, clients, and collaborators
  • Participate in interdisciplinary processes across diverse consultancy tasks such as workshops, competitions, biodiversity strategies, and urban planning

It is essential that you:

  • Have a professional background in ecology and a strong professional profile within biodiversity (preferably related to urban development)
  • Have extensive knowledge of the latest science and best practices in biodiversity
  • Have experience with nature mapping and assessment, and a basic understanding of nature and environmental legislation
  • Possess strong species identification skills, including knowledge of protected and invasive species
  • Have good writing skills in English, including the ability to communicate ecological insights to both expert and non-expert audiences
  • Are confident working in interdisciplinary teams with designers, planners, and engineers
  • Understand ecological networks, ecosystem services, and infrastructures
  • Are familiar with biodiversity strategies and planning at urban and regional scales

It is considered an advantage if you have:

  • Have professional experience working in one or more of the following markets: Denmark, Norway, the United Kingdom, the UAE, or Canada
  • Have experience with GIS, remote sensing, or other ecological data analysis
  • Are familiar with sustainability certifications and planning tools (e.g., BREEAM, DGNB, BNG)
  • Have basic experience with the Adobe package, especially InDesign
  • Have knowledge of animal-aided design, urban ecology, and nature restoration practices
  • Understand how to navigate environmental policy in planning and permitting processes
