Norway's New Government Quarter opens to the public

It is with great humility and honour that we can share that Norway’s New Government Quarter now opens to the public – after more than 12 years of planning and design!

In a time where more and more governmental facilities and campuses are being isolated and moved out of our cities in the name of security, the design ambition of Oslo’s New Government Quarter is radically different: To be a democratic part of the daily urban fabric in the heart of Oslo.

The design responds directly to questions raised after the terrorist attack 22 July 2011: how to balance necessary security with openness and trust in public institutions?

The public realm design interweaves openness, public life, safety, city nature, and public artworks in a new civic gesture in the heart of Oslo. The artwork 'Sebastia' (detail photo) is made by artist Jumana Manna.

“With the New Government Quarter's public realm design, we restitch Oslo’s city fabric by opening and creating new routes through the area – bringing public life back to bringing public life back to the heart of Oslo. Security measures are integrated into the urban design, creating an open and democratic – and at the same time secure and quietly monumental – civic space.”

— SLA design director and partner, Louise Fiil Hansen.
SLA has worked on the project since 2014, devising the public realm concept and master plan. SLA and Bjørbekk & Lindheim have collaborated through the concept and schematic design phases, with Bjørbekk & Lindheim completing the detail design.

We cannot wait to invite ministers, government workers, foreign officials, visitors, and all Norwegians back into their NEW GOVERNMENT QUARTER when it opens this spring.

The project is designed together with our friends Bjørbekk & Lindheim, our client Statssbygg, and our wider amazing design team of Nordic, Haptic, Scenario, and I-D Interiørarkitekter.
