Downsview receives the 2024 National Urban Design Award

We are honored to share that our Downsview Framework Plan has won the 2024 National Urban Design Award – Canada’s premier award for planning and urban design.

The National Urban Design Awards are bestowed by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, The Canadian Institute of Planners, and The Canadian Society of Landscape Architects.

In its comments, the jury applauds Downsview’s ambitious nature-first approach:

“Big ideas and aspirations are well bundled into this master plan with a strong focus on nature in the city. This project is a demonstration of how a once-negative industrial site can be transformed into a valuable resource for future generations and should be used as an example for other municipalities.”

— The 2024 National Urban Design Award Jury
In Downsview, we introduce a whole new hierarchy for how to design our cities and our communities. By putting nature first, we create a new way of living in Toronto centered on biodiversity, climate resilience, local identity, and strong community. We call this design approach ‘City Nature’.

Congratulations to all the amazing citizens that we’ve worked closely together with in crafting the Downsview Framework Plan, to our collaborators KPMB Architects, Henning Larsen, and Urban Strategies Inc., and to our amazing and bold clients Northcrest Developments and Canada Lands Company / Société Immobilière du Canada.
