Internship with SLA
— Light and Darkness Design

SLA is looking for a talented student with an interest in light, darkness, and biodiversity who wants to be part of everyday life at our studio in Copenhagen during the fall of 2023.
As an intern at SLA, you will be part of our interdisciplinary team, which consists of biologists, anthropologists, geographers, lighting designers, landscape architects, and others. The team works closely with the design studio’s other teams with the common goal of designing better conditions for life, both for people and the nature we are a part of. We promise you a vibrant and varied everyday life in a creative and informal environment. We appreciate an informal tone and have a workplace culture with room to take the initiative, ask questions and become wiser in the process.
About the internship
At SLA, we work with biodiversity on all our projects and design places for all life; this also applies to the way we work with lighting design. Many species are unable to thrive in areas that are lit up at night, which is why we often work with a focus on integrating darkness, trying to balance the perception of safety and protection of biodiversity.
Research on the topic is limited, which is why we are looking for an intern with a passion for investigating how light and darkness affect biodiversity. This will include a lot of fieldwork at night, to experience and understand different areas and how our specialists e.g., biologists, map different kinds of biodiversity.
Therefore, it is essential that you can recognize yourself in the following statements:
— You get excited about light levels below 1lx
— Going out at night with a spectrometer is considered fun
— Working with materials and surfaces sparks an interest
— You love looking for hidden gems in research articles
— Maybe you are interested in how aesthetics can affect the perception of safety at night, working strategically with light and shadows to support biodiversity or something completely different
If this caught your interest, you are very welcome to send us an application – better now than later.
Your educational background – and expectations for you
We expect that you are studying to become a lighting designer or similar and are in your masters – and that you have completed your bachelor’s degree. We cannot offer you an internship if you have already graduated with your master’s degree. You are very welcome to apply for an internship as a foreign resident.
It is essential that you:
— Are willing to work interdisciplinary and can translate knowledge and subject matter into solution-oriented recommendations that are understandable and applicable to different subjects and target groups. Of course, in close cooperation with your colleagues.
— Can express yourself well in writing and convey knowledge and your work in a simple, concrete, and understandable way – in Danish and/or in English.
— Are trained in Dialux and the Adobe package (AutoCad and 3D programs such as Rhino and 3DS Max would be a plus).
— We emphasize that you are easy to learn and work independently, are welcoming and curious, and, not least, that you have a beating green heart.
Working hours and conditions
Working hours are 37 hours per week, and the internship has a duration of about five months, starting August 21st, 2023. You will be part of our lunch scheme and various social events, and have access to fruit, tea, and freshly ground coffee in our canteen.
How do you apply for the internship?
Your application does not have to include a portfolio. Just let us know why you are interested in working with exterior lighting and darkness none the least – and include your CV.
To apply, send us your motivated application and CV as a PDF.
Send your application to hr@sla.dk (Subject: ‘Internship, lighting design’).
We must have your application latest by Thursday, June 22nd, 2023. Interviews will be held continuously. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our People Manager via hr@sla.dk
