Surprising design and ecological sustainability forms the basis for SLA’s proposal for a residential area by Stolligvej in Aabenraa. The landscape is shaped to create new attractions and a number of energy saving advan-tages to the future residents.

The new residential area embraces the needs we have today for combining urban life with experiences of nature and social life. The gently undulating landscape provides the opportunity to place the houses at different levels with views and light. The buildings are placed in relation to the sun, to allow residents maximal use of the outdoor spaces and the precious few hours of sun. As an energy saving bonus the houses are grouped together, reducing heat loss. Additionally the hills shield against the wind and in this way reduces the need for heating.

The rain and waste water will benefit the residents in more than one way. First the water is collected in new wetland areas, which transforms the area into a beautiful and surprising landscape that changes with the seasons and attracts a rich variety of birds. On the other hand the amount of waste water is reduced by collecting rainwater for toilet flushing, clothes washing and cleaning. In this way robust sustainability and experiences of nature are created for the residents.
