The Carlsberg Brewery in Valby, Copenhagen verges on being a national treasure – rich in unexpected juxtapositions of industrial buildings and architectonic gems and pockets of greenery. But can it also become an interesting place to live?

SLA ’s proposal for the transformation of the Carlsberg site focuses on people. It is people that fill a city with life, and make it interesting to live in. Ground Floor CHP therefore turns the ground floor throughout this entire part of the city into a publicly accessible space, forming the basis for a vivacious urban neighbourhood with an extensive program of cultural and commercial options: An urban neighbourhood at eye level. With this single act, the distinctive spatial composition of the buildings and outdoor areas, which today characterize the area, become the foundation for all future urban development. A flow of space, people and experience.

Ground Floor CPH is a multiarena for urban culture. The public space will accommodate traditional use, such as cafés, concerts, jazz festivals for kids and shopping. It will also host new activities, such as street sports, experiences of nature and integration initiatives. By allowing the urban space to vary in scale, design and degree of public accessibility, it will inspire to an all-round use, social life and reflection.
