Avedøre Camp |

Type of project: Masterplan, Design Manual, Green Manual
Avedøre Camp, formerly a military area, is currently being transformed into a lively urban area with housing, employment and cultural activities. SLA has produced a Masterplan, a Design Manual, and a Green Manual to ensure that the original character of the camp is preserved and strengthened in the development of the new neighbourhood.
The military characteristics of the camp and proper appearance should be conserved by retaining the most commonly used materials such as wood, cast iron and steel that appear in red-brown and grey shades. The old buildings should be restored and renovated with great care, and new buildings should be built with respect for the original architecture.
In the following are examples of the guidelines provided in the manuals. |
SLA’s Green Manual ensures that the trees and garden spaces, that underpin the Camp’s original architectural and spatial character are preserved and developed.
The existing planting consists of mature Beech, Elm, Maple, Rowan, Lime, Birch and Oak trees, many of which are of conservation value and contribute a sense of establishment to the Camp. These trees should therefore be protected and the growing conditions safeguarded. In order to maintain an overall harmonious impression, new trees should be of the same species as the existing trees.
Built-in fixtures such as clocks set in the brickwork, water pumps and weathervanes bear witness to the history of the camp and cultural identity and should therefore be preserved and maintained. New elements such as lighting, bicycle st ands, signs and bins are presented in the design manual. They are in keeping with the character of the camp, painted in carefully selected colours and thereby integrated into the surroundings. |
Wide open lawns are also characteristic of the camp, providing a campus-like character. These lawns should be preserved and should not be divided or enclosed with fencing or planting. |

SLA was awarded Hvidovre Municipality’s Architecture Prize 2000-2001 for the planning of the Avedøre Camp. |
