Many of us are attracted by the atmosphere in redundant industrial areas and abandoned military barracks. The traces of culture and production have great value and give a place identity. The old industrial area by Amager Strand contains, despite its run down appearance, a number of qualities that many residential developments lack, for example varied sequences of spaces, urban spaces of human scale and niches for shelter from wind and rain. At the same time the place has a history and identity that new residential areas often lack and only gain after many decades.

The masterplan for the new neighbourhood is based on a densification of the building mass, creating a combination of old and new, large and small and tall and low. A flexible model for development of the neighbourhood is proposed, where the whole area at ground level becomes one cohesive and complex structure. A structure that reminds us of the qualities found in historic quarters – density, atmosphere, variety and texture.

This development concept is likely to appeal to a broad segment of the population and future residents. By dividing the area into four quarters it is possible to adjust the composition of dwelling types in the plan. Thus it is possible to combine the structure we know from old towns with a hyper modern and convenient lifestyle.
