The structural form of the museum is floating above the water as a mysterious cloud.
Depending on the light it will look like a mirage reflecting the mountains and glaciers or like a dark cloud with a glowing or burning centre.
The cantilevered structure is stretching out above the water, the under-surface being lit up by the reflections of the water or illuminated by underwater floodlight projectors in the night.
An association springs to mind of a Norwegian wharf standing on piles in the water enveloped in fog.

The quay level is continued in ramps, stairs and terraces to the foyer and exhibition rooms of the museum. The foyer is designed as a canyon between the volumes and intersects the building as an indoor public space.
A twisted course of stairs runs from the public life at quay level via the exhibition levels to a sky-lounge and roof terrace for peace and tranquility overlooking the roofs of the museum, the fiord and the mountains.
The foyer gives access to all public functions such as book café, lecture rooms and theatre, cinema, restaurant, exhibition halls, sky-lounge, sponsor rooms and open magazines.

The mouth of the Aker River will be an alluring area in the city with a green delta landscape projected into the Oslo Fiord surrounded by the water, the city and the mountains.
The museum on the water will together with the Opera House be the centre and icon for the new quarters around Bjørvika. The ensemble of the museum, the Opera and the commercial and residential buildings create an attractive, green and lively area in the city.
The beach park is a wealth of public recreational possibilities right across the north-south connection between the harbour and the inner city.
It conceptually consists of selected pieces of landscape folded into each other. All edges are suitable for sitting or lead as stairs down to the waterside.
The beach park is an intense oasis full of experiences. It welcomes you to drop by for a refreshing drink, to engage in play - or to kiss your girlfriend!
