2nd prize in Aachen

In the competition of the park Elisen Garden in Aachen in Germany, SLA was awarded with a 2nd prize.

Aachen came to existence around hot springs and SLA ’s starting point for the project was this unique history. You can see the hot springs in wells and that will make you think of the history of the town. The town history is also present in sounds of croaking frogs, horse’s hoof and bells from the time the park was a part of a convent. These new initiatives will make Elisen Garten a part of the lively urban life in Aachen.

SLA creates new urban space for Nykredit

Nykredit constructs, in collaboration with SLA , an open urban space called ‘the Cloud’, on the 5,800 m2 large triangular plot by Hambrogsgade, Puggardsgade and Kalvebod Brygge in central Copenhagen. The square a building drawn by Schmidt Hammer Lassen will be built. This building, which Nykredit has named ‘the Crystal ’, will be the workplace of 350-400 employees.

In the new open space people and weather meet. Fountains will fill the space with the sound of water in a quivering moist-filled and cool light - a light, which we know from the Danish summer coasts. The changing cloud images of the sky will be doubled in a reflecting water surface with rapid glimpses of passer-bys and parts of the surrounding architecture. At night the water surface changes the space and it remains in a phosphorescence-like glow mixed with the warm sunny light reminding us of spring. The next time we enter this new urban space the light of an overcast day has made the warm sandstone light up the space and double the surroundings in an airy mirage.

The Committee of Planning and Architecture in the Municipality of Copenhagen are working on a proposal to supplement the district plan and a municipal plan supplement. Nykredit expects the construction to commence in spring 2007.

High attendance at the public meeting in Berlin

On the 29 th and the 30 th April Berlin’s citizens were invited to contribute with comments and ideas for the railway ground, Gleisdreieck, south of Potsdamer Platz. The workshop presented an opportunity for citizens to meet with the 11 architectural practices selected to continue work on their proposals – of which 9 were German and 2 foreign.

After two intensive days of dialogue SLA returned back with a thick stack of drawings with additions and ideas from the citizens. SLA is now continuing work with a new sense of the everyday use of the Gleisdreieck area and the way of life and life stories associated with the area. With this knowledge SLA will work up the proposal for the second phase of the competition – work that will continue until the 26 th June.

The Gleisdreieck Park competition is noteworthy in that the citizens have a particularly large influence on the result. Read more about Gleisdreieck, the views of the citizens and innovative methods in the architecture competition on:
